Welcome to Day 2!

I’m so excited about all of the possibilities of my new blog.  Getting to know me better means that next I need to share one of my biggest accomplishments ever, and learn about one way that I try to keep my sanity and health.  Just about a week and a half ago I completed my first ever half marathon.  This was not an easy task.  I trained with the NYC Chapter of Team in Training (TNT) twice a week in Central Park, and ran on my own about two more times per week.  Towards the middle of training, I developed plantar fascitis in my right foot.  This made training painful, but with the help of physical therapy and lots of frozen water bottles and ice packs I was able to pull through.  The race I chose was the NYC 1/2 Marathon.  This was such a great race because the course takes you right through Times Square.  If you ever have the opportunity to run this race, it is definitely one I would suggest. 

Here is my quick race recap for you.

We had to be at our meeting spot at 5:45AM, which meant that I woke up at 4:00AM to eat and hydrate.  My pre-race breakfast, which I’m sure you will see posted in the coming weeks is one gluten free waffle topped with peanut butter & co. chocolate peanut butter.  My mom and grandma came from North Carolina just to see me run the race.

 After leaving my family, we waited with our team and headed into our corrals.  The excitement from everyone seemed great.  The race started off great althought it took us almost 11 minutes to start the race.  There were water / gatorade stations about every mile or so which really helped since it was so hot.  The Central Park portion of the race was easy because we trained in the park every week.  Also, all of the hills of the race were in the park.  About mile 4 was when we hit Harlem Hill, which is the notoriously hard hill in the park.  We took to the hills like pros in my opinion and ran them easy so we could just make it through.  Once we finished the hills, there was only a short time before we had finished the first 7 miles and moved out of the park.  Next was the most exciting part of the race…the run through Times Square.  Music was playing, and I knew that I would see my family and one of my friends along the way.  At this point, I picked up my speed and felt like I was flying on air.

After running through Times Square, the race stayed great up until mile 11.  At that point, it was really hot…the sun was beating down on me.  I tried to run faster, but I just couldn’t go any faster than I was.  At the finish line, I looked for my family and finally saw my in-laws right after the finish line.  My husband missed me crossing the finish line, but here are a few more pictures after the race.

I’m not running right now as I try to heal my feet.  Hopefully I can start running easy short runs this weekend.

Tonight, I want to leave you with my dinner.  As you’ll see in this blog, I’m very busy and like to have easy meals at night.  Tonight the base of my meal was premade.  I shop quite often at Trader Joes.  My husband and I really like the premade polenta log and ratatouille.  The ratatouille is good on its own, but I like to add some extra seasonings and tomatoes if I have them.  Today was my lucky day because I purchased an heirloom tomato from a greenmarket near my office to go along with a few smaller heirloom tomatoes already in my refrigerator.  I also added garlic powder, crushed chili pepper, and some sliced mushrooms.  For the polenta, you just slice it and pan fry until lightly browned on both sides.  You can serve the dish with sprinkled parmesan which makes it very tasty.
