Tag Archives: Turkey Burger

Being gluten free does not allow for many buns of any kind.  I have found a few types of bread that I can tolerate and some that I like.  Since we had our bbq this past weekend, I wanted to be able to enjoy a bun with my meal just like everyone else.  I have to say that this was one time recently when I was a little jealous of everyone else’s buns.  We had wonder bread hamburger and hot dog buns.  I didn’t even touch them, but there is just something about the consistency and gooeyness of that type of bread.

Before the bbq last week, we bought several items at Stop and Shop, which has recently expanded their gluten free food section.  They had gluten free hamburger buns from kinnikinnick.  I have tried the kinnikinnick gluten free english muffins, which are good but not the best, so I thought I would give the hamburger buns a try as well.

At the bbq, I forgot to take a picture, but I really wanted a hot dog instead of a hamburger, so I just broke a hot dog in half and put it on this bun.  Tonight though, I was really craving a hamburger and fries.  So I defrosted another one of these hamburger buns, and we cooked turkey burgers, baked yukon gold potato fries, and sauteed onions with squash and zucchini as a topping for the burgers.

The bun looks so real, and it tasted great.  I fully defrosted the bun, and then sliced it and toasted it in the toaster oven.  It was a little crumbly when it was first sliced, but once I made it into a sandwich it was great.  I was also afraid the bun would taste just like the english muffins since they look almost exactly the same.  They have a completely different taste.  These are the first hamburger buns I’ve tried since becoming gluten free and I really liked them.

For the fries…

  • Preheat the oven to 450
  • Slice the potatoes into fry like shapes
  • spray a baking pan with olive oil cooking spray
  • sprinkle the fries with paprika, pepper, salt and a little more cooking spray
  • then toss it all together
  • bake until crispy (you may need to turn the fries a few times while cooking)

The fries really helped with my craving.  They were so good.  Thanks to Mike for helping to season them.

The sauteed onion, zucchini and squash topping was great too.  It gave the burgers some extra nutrition and helped use up some vegetables that had been sitting in the fridge for a bit too long.
